Committed to Clean-Coal Technology

Kentucky's Touchstone Energy Cooperatives are using cutting-edge technology to meet the growing demand for power while slashing power plant pollution.

In 2005 and 2009, EKPC brought on-line two of America's cleanest coal-generating units at Spurlock Station. Both units use circulating fluidized bed technology that results in extremely low emission levels. The emissions that are visible from the clean coal units are water vapor.

Altogether, Kentucky's Touchstone Energy Cooperatives have invested nearly $1.8 billion in emissions-control and clean-coal technologies. That includes the cost of adding two of the nation's cleanest coal-generating units to our system. It also includes retrofitting EKPC's existing fleet of coal-fueled generating units with equipment that will further reduce pollution.

Looking to the future, Kentucky's Touchstone Energy Cooperatives are supporting research with UK and the state of Kentucky in a partnership at our Dale Station, using algae to capture CO2 and to convert it to biomass. We are also providing funding to support research at UK into more conventional methods of reducing carbon dioxide emissions. "We are making major investments in improving power plant emissions," said CEO Tony Campbell. "This is the best alternative for complying with the government's more-stringent air quality rules while continuing to provide affordable, reliable power for Kentucky."
