Seniors awarded Touchstone Energy
All "A" Classic scholarships

Seventy seniors from Kentucky's smallest high schools were awarded $1,000 college scholarships this week through the Touchstone Energy All "A" Classic.

More will be awarded later this summer based on funding and availability.

"Our sponsorship of the All "A" Classic is just one more way we show support for the communities we serve," said Jeff Hohman of Kentucky's Touchstone Energy Cooperatives. "We are committed to youth, education and athletics, and we are proud of the many young people who will take part in these competitions."

Interviews for the scholarships were conducted Saturday, Jan. 5, at Kentucky State University in Frankfort.

One hundred and twenty-five seniors from Kentucky's smallest high schools came to Frankfort for interviews they hoped would earn them the $1,000 college scholarships.

Seventy of the competing students initially have been named scholarship winners. But an additional 30 or so will receive in-kind $1,000 scholarships from various Kentucky colleges by the end of the summer.

Five hundred and eighteen students from all areas of the Commonwealth applied for the awards. The interviews were conducted by panels of business people and educators from across the state.

Students from the state's 131 smallest schools qualify for various Touchstone Energy All "A" Classic programs in academics and sports, including competitions for the scholarships and in basketball, art, cheerleading, baseball, softball, volleyball, golf and soccer.

Eligible students for the scholarships must be in their senior year at one of Kentucky's Class "A" high schools. The students must attend a post-secondary school in Kentucky, whether it is a college, university, community college or vocational/technical school. The All "A" Classic has awarded more than $1 million in academic awards since it started giving scholarships about 20 years ago, said Stan Steidel of Cold Spring, the Classic's executive director.

"The scholarship program would not be possible without the sponsorship and cooperation of Kentucky's Touchstone Energy Cooperatives and our other supporters," Steidel said.

The 2013 basketball tournament will take place at the Frankfort Convention Center. From Jan. 23 to Jan. 27, 16 boys' and 16 girls' regional basketball champs will battle it out for All "A" state titles. In-game cheerleading competitions also will be held during the first rounds of boys' and girls' basketball play.

All basketball games will be broadcast by Fox Sports SOUTH.
