Take a deep breath of fresh air

One of the most positive trends you may not know is that East Kentucky Power Cooperative (EKPC) has significantly increased output of electric power, while adding equipment that has dramatically reduced emissions.

Electric utilities generally have been criticized because much of the electricity we generate comes from coal-fueled plants.

But modern coal-fired units are amazingly clean. Emissions of sulfur dioxide from EKPC's Spurlock Unit #1 in Mason County, for example, declined a whopping 95 percent after new pollution-control equipment was added.

That's typical of the improvements that have occurred not only at EKPC, but with electric utilities around the nation. You might want to know these other indisputable facts:

• For three decades, air quality in the United States has consistently improved. The ongoing trend is downward, toward less and less overall air pollution, year after year.

• According to official state measurements, the air in Kentucky is cleaner now than it's ever been since monitoring began.

• One factor contributing to these first two trends is that coal-fired generating plants are up to 20 times cleaner than they once were.

EKPC is committed to generating and transmitting safe, reliable, affordable electricity to our members.
